There is not a "best" ratio for a lawn fertilizer. In the springtime, when the grass is actively growing, a fertilizer such as Lawn Food (15-5-10, 16-4-8 or 27-4-6) with a higher "N" ratio is recommended. For a new seeding or fall fertilization, the "N" component is not typically as high as a lawn fertilizer. Examples of those fertilizers would be an All Season Seed Starter (18-24-6 or 18-24-12) or Fall Feed (27-3-14 or 17-10-12).
