Grow a Thicker Grass

Consumer Question
I live in the southeast and my grass looks terrible. I want a thicker grass in my front yard, but am not sure what I need to do to make this happen. I have tall fescue in both my front and back yard, and my back yard looks much better than my front yard. Any suggestions?

Expert Answer
I suggest overseeding your lawn to help thicken it up and fall is actually the best time to plant Tall Fescue seed. Start by mowing your lawn as short as possible. Make sure you bag or rake up the clipping. Next, use a metal rake to loosen up the top ¼” to ½” of soil. This exposes the soil and ensures a good seed bed. Next, plant the new seed at the manufactures recommended seeding rate as well as apply a starter fertilizer to the seeded area. Lastly, cover the seed with a thin layer of top soil, seeding mulch or wheat straw. You will need to keep the seed moist until it germinates.
