Damaged Grass

Consumer Question
I overseeded my Fescue lawn this fall and it came up very well. The problem is that I did not do a good job keeping the leaves off the new grass. When I finally got around to getting the leaves up, I noticed I now have some spots of dead and damaged grass in my lawn. What would you recommend I do to fix these areas?

Expert Answer
Based on the time of year and temperatures you will probably need to wait until spring to fix the problem. Tall Fescue seed germinates best when average daily temperatures are between 60o – 80o F. I would recommend that you try to keep the remaining falling leaves off the new grass to avoid any more damage. Once spring rolls around you can seed the bare spots and damaged areas.
