How do I best prepare the site for seeding?
To best prepare a site for a new seeding, the following procedures should be followed:
- It is recommended that a sample of the soil be checked for its pH and nutrient content. (County extension services perform soil tests.)
- Till or loosen the soil. Add any corrective materials (fertilizer, lime) recommended as a result of a soil test at this time. Rake and remove debris such as grass clumps and small stones, leveling out any uneven areas. Loosening the soil is one of the most important steps in site preparation. Be sure to loosen soil thoroughly to ensure proper seed to soil contact.
- Apply a Seed Starter Fertilizer at the recommended rate using a broadcast spreader.
- Apply grass seed evenly over the area without skips or misses. A more uniform application can be made with broadcast (rotary) type spreaders by spreading half the required amount over the area and then applying the remaining half at right angles.
- A light raking or rolling of the lawn area should be done after seeding to ensure good soil contact. Good seed to soil contact is critical for proper germination and establishment.
